Nothing About Us Without Us
Guest Speaker: Qasim Hassan
In honour of International Recovery Month (September 2024), this episode, titled "Nothing About Us Without Us” focuses on the lived experiences of substance misuse and dependence with National Health Service peer support worker, Qasim Hassan.
The conversation begins with Qasim sharing his personal experience with substance misuse, what led him to seek help, and how services like peer support can be a vital tool for change. He describes the essential support offered by peer services, emphasising how many who receive help often go on to work in these services as they believe working amongst them allows them to lead meaningful lives beyond recovery.
We then talk about how “effective recovery” is defined and the gaps in understanding that researchers often miss when studying substance misuse and dependence. Qasim also highlights the importance of demedicalizing the human condition, encouraging a broader, more nuanced view beyond the common Western perspective. He stresses that substance misuse and mental health are not black and white issues but require a more compassionate, layered understanding.
Qasim’s story sheds light on the importance of accessible, empathetic support and the power of lived experience in guiding others through recovery.
